The Best: Tankless Electric Water Heating

Tempra® is manufactured by Stiebel Eltron, a pioneer and leader in tankless water heating technology for over 90 years. Endless hot water, advanced technology, impressive energy-saving performance, and a compact design are only a few of the reasons to consider a Tempra® tankless water heater.

Advanced Flow Control

Stiebel Eltron invented Advanced Flow Control, and our tankless water heaters have had a version of it since 1970. Awarded German patent DE 3805441 C2, among others, we have continually improved this technology for almost 50 years.

When demand gets too great, other manufacturers get cold. Tempra Plus reduces flow to keep the temp hot.

Tempra Advanced Flow Control Module Close-up

Advanced Flow Control is a standard feature in our Tempra® Plus models. If the demand asked of a Tempra® Plus is greater than the water heater can handle, Advanced Flow Control works by automatically reducing the flow of water slightly. Unlike water heaters from other manufacturers that can deliver colder water than desired, a Tempra® Plus automatically delivers slightly less water, but at the hot water temperature wanted. There is never a cold water surprise with a Tempra® Plus!

Advanced Flow Control is exclusive to our Tempra® Plus models. No other manufacturer of tankless electric water heaters has anything like it.

Self-Modulation Energy Technology

Every Tempra® also has self-modulation. Self-modulation is sometimes confused with flow control, but it has more to do with the amount of energy used to heat the water. Self-modulation, sometimes call auto-modulation, ensures that only the least amount of energy is used at all times. Every Tempra® model continually monitors incoming water temperature, the flow rate of water through the heater, and the water temperature it produces. These sensors feed their readings into the unit’s proprietary microprocessor control which engages the heating elements in stages, as efficiently as possible, to achieve the water temperature set on the front panel, always using the least amount of energy necessary to heat the water.

Constant Temperature Output

While only Tempra® Plus has Advanced Flow Control, every Tempra® has smart microprocessor technology and several temperature and flow sensors. This technology ensures a steady output temperature even if flow rates vary up or down, like when hot water is being used and an additional tap is opened or closed. Tankless electric water heaters from other manufacturers don’t maintain a steady temperature if the flow varies. A Tempra® always does. Our exclusive Electronic Temperature Control allows setting the knob on the front cover to the water temperature desired and getting that temperature every time, and all the time, hot water is needed.

All this electronic technology also means that Tempra® does not have any mechanical switches. It is completely silent while operating.

Unlimited Supply of Hot Water

A Stiebel Eltron Tempra® responds directly to your demand for hot water without interruption. Showers will always be hot, even if there are several taken in a row and they run long. A tank water heater may be able to deliver more water all at once, but once the tank starts to deplete things get cold and pretty quickly come to a standstill while waiting for the tank to recover.

Sizing Guide Map

Hot water needs vary from home to home. Stiebel Eltron’s full line of Tempra® tankless water heaters offers a variety of choices to meet all requirements.

The correct size Tempra® largely depends on the temperature of the ground water and the number of bathrooms in a house. It’s easy to determine which Tempra® model best satisfies a household’s needs. Click the map for the complete Sizing Guide.

If there are high flow showers, or another out-of-the-ordinary situation, please call or email for advice. Stiebel Eltron service representatives provide assistance and make recommendations on sizing, or any other matter concerning our water heaters, to both homeowners and professional installers.

Sleek Design Saves Space and Reduces Waste

By installing a Stiebel Eltron Tempra®, you will free up several square feet of floor space that your bulky hot water tank is now using. Also, due to their small size, they use vastly less raw material to manufacture compared to a tank. Disposal of a tankless has a much lower environmental impact, and all major components are recyclable.

Easy to Install

Tempra is the size of a briefcase and easy to install

A Stiebel Eltron Tempra® doesn't cost any more to purchase than a conventional tank water heater. Installation is often cheaper. Because storing water at high temperatures shortens the lifespan of a conventional tank water heater, Stiebel Eltron tankless units also have a longer service life, saving you money by reducing how often replacement is necessary.

Large and bulky hot water tanks are usually placed in a basement or utility room. Because the tank may not be close to where hot water is used, there is a wait for hot water. A Tempra’s compact design can be installed close to the hot water taps. When this can be done, in new construction for instance, the wait for hot water becomes as short as possible. Even in a retrofit, where it might not be possible to place a Tempra® closer to the hot water draw-off points, its considerably smaller size has many advantages.

Seismic Proof Construction

Because a Tempra® is a tankless water heating system, it is not subject to seismic building code. There is no need for the preventative construction required with a tank water heater.

Maximum Output Temperature Limit

Tempra® Plus tankless water heaters can be set to limit the maximum hot water temperature to 109°F. This can be important in some installations to prevent the possibility of scalding.

Saves Energy and Reduces Your Electric Bills

Compared to a conventional electric tank water heater, a tankless electric water heater will typically use 15–20% less energy, although savings can be substantially higher depending on usage habits. Conventional electric tank water heaters continually store hot water and as a result lose 15-20% of the total energy they consume to the environment around them. This is called standby heat loss. Gas or oil tank water heaters are even less efficient due to the fact that they also must be vented to the outdoors. A tankless electric water heater does not need to be vented, and does not store full temperature hot water waiting for you to use it.

In addition, installing low-flow showerheads and flow-reducing sink aerators, coupled with optimising your personal water usage habits can result in savings much greater than the typical 15-20%. Installing additional point-of-use tankless water heaters at individual sinks or other hot water usage locations can provide additional energy savings.
