The Arenal Nayara is celebrated as one of the world's most luxurious hotels and, according to TripAdvisor, ranks as one of the five most romantic destinations on the planet. Situated in the heart of Arenal Volcano National Park, the hotel is committed to protecting the surrounding biodiversity, conservation efforts, and sustainable environmental management.
The hotel emphasizes energy and water savings by using energy-efficient bulbs, flow-reducing faucets, and showers, and encourages towel reuse among guests. Recognizing the need for greater environmental responsibility, the hotel decided to replace its less efficient tank-based electric water heaters, aligning with its ecological standards.
In 2013, the hotel, committed to harmonizing its operations with the environment, chose to upgrade its water heating system to the more efficient Accelera 300 and Accelera 300 E models from Stiebel Eltron, a global leader in electric water heating solutions. This decision reflects the hotel's dedication to sustainability and efficient energy use.
Both the Accelera 300 and the Accelera 300 E, both with heat pumps, are systems that take advantage of environmental conditions to operate efficiently. These modern devices use the high temperatures of their surroundings to heat water, while also cooling and dehumidifying the air around them. In other words, they function like an air conditioner, but instead of expelling heat to the outside, they use it to heat water.
The initial installation process was phased, and by 2015, 40 units were operational. Encouraged by promising initial results, the hotel decided to continue acquiring the system to replace less efficient units previously installed and to equip new villas and bungalows.
Freddy Obando, the hotel's general manager, confirmed the benefits of using the Accelera 300 and Accelera 300 E heaters, praising their efficiency. He highlighted their dual function: saving energy in water heating and expelling cool air, as reported to Apetito magazine in Costa Rica.
By 2018, the hotel had installed a total of 90 units, which not only operated efficiently but also functioned without any issues or problems.
Since the installation of the Stiebel Eltron Accelera 300 and Accelera 300 E heaters, the hotel has reduced its electrical consumption, achieving savings of up to 60%. This has helped to strengthen its ecological image, earning it multiple recognitions, such as the TripAdvisor EcoLeaders Gold Level, and affirming its commitment to environmental preservation and care.
